The core technology and the manufacturing process was initially developed by a joint R&D collaboration program between industry ( Tata Steel), Academia ( Swansea University) and government funding (Wales).
Following further incubation at Swansea University, BIPVCo was spun out in April 2015.
Production was ramped up from lab scale to commercial scale and all necessary accreditations and certifications were secured while building demonstrators across diverse geographies and applications.
The company is a pioneer in the adoption of CIGS technology to solve many of the issues not addressed by conventional solar solutions, particularly for mobile fleet applications whether it be ICE’s or EV’s. The main brief is to meet as much of the ancillary power needs of the ICE vehicle as possible by use of solar technology.
MIPV does not merely manufacture standard solar modules but works collaboratively with key partners to deliver optimised and customised plug and play solar solutions- specifically tailored to meet the needs of the project and its use.
MIPV’s prime development location and production facility is based in Newport, South Wales, UK. All our modules are manufactured on site and shipped worldwide for a wide range of projects. Every module has full traceability as part of our quality control process.

The vision of MIPV is to reduce the need for inefficient and environmentally damaging fossil fuels in mobile & deployable applications and thereby avoid harmful emissions so damaging to the environment and our wellbeing. Semi hybridisation using MIPV’s technology in vehicles and off grid scenarios offers a gateway to improving the situation.
